Verdana Typeface Booklet

Background:

For this project we all picked a typeface and I chose the popular web typeface, Verdana. The backstory of the font is interesting because it was mainly designed for Microsoft and was meant to stay on the computer. But, in 2015 Ikea switched their font from Futura to Verdana on their catalogs and as the Ikea main font. While learning about the Ikea typeface switch, it gave me the idea of doing a booklet similar to a catalog where you show off furniture, but in this case show off the unique features the Verdana typeface has to offer.

Visual Design:

The cover is inspired by Swedish design because Ikea is a Swedish company. I wanted to include a few pages that resembled the Ikea catalog style as well as incorporating a minimal design. In the booklet you were suppose to include date and designer it was created from, the alphabet and numbers, and other design elements that you wanted to include.

Challenges:

During this project, I mainly struggled with coming up with a visual design direction to showcase the typeface. Verdana is mainly a web font, so I had to come up with a way to present it beautifully in print. Using an Ikea catalog as my visual direction helped to present that this font may be primarily for the web, but Ikea uses it and it can be printed and look nice too.
